Discover Tanzania with Farm Radio International!

In 2013 our executive director, Kevin Perkins, relocated to Tanzania to spend a year in the field, closer to FRI’s work on the ground. Ever since returning home to Ottawa a couple of years ago, he’s wanted to go back — bringing a few of FRI’s most dedicated supporters along for the ride. Now the trip he’s been dreaming of is just around the corner …

Our first-ever learning tour and safari will take place in February 2017, with Kevin as the host! He has an amazing trip planned that will help you see for yourself the power of radio while exploring a country known for its culture, wildlife, and geological wonders.

A limited number of spots are still available to what is sure to be an amazing trip. Here’s what we have planned:

Itinerary

delete later - day 1Day 1: Arrival & Rest

Arrive in Arusha, at the base of Mount Meru, and settle in at our hotel to recover from the long journey. If you’re up for it, explore the town with local FRI staff, perhaps watching a Premier League soccer match while drinking a cold Kilimanjaro beer and eating some barbecued chicken!

HangarDay 2: Arusha

Start the day learning about FRI’s work at our African headquarters. See the latest interactive radio technologies under development at our radio and ICT innovation lab, The Hangar. After lunch, visit a local radio station to learn about its farm radio programs. End the day with a tour of Arusha and dinner at an outdoor restaurant.

delete later - CLG2Day 3: Usa River & Malala

Travel to the nearby town of Usa River to meet and talk to community listening groups and individual farmers. Next, head to the village of Mulala to be a guest at Mama Anna’s farm. Help her roast and grind fresh coffee, go on a guided walking tour of the surrounding hamlets, hills, and valleys, and then return to the farm to enjoy dinner, music, and stories under a starry sky.

delete later - claraDay 4: Moshi

After breakfast with Mama Anna, head east to the town of Moshi, at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. Visit a local radio station to meet producers and hosts of farm radio programs, then travel with station staff to the communities they serve to meet farmers who rely on radio every day.

delete later - zebraDays 5-8: Safari

Rise early to travel to the town of Karatu, the starting point for our four-day safari. In addition to spotting wildlife, you might choose to hike in Lake Manyara National Park, take a trip to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and explore the Olduvai Gorge Museum, visit a Maasai community the, or tour a community radio station. We will stay in a range of comfortable, safe, and interesting accommodations.

delete later - zanzibar2Days 9-12: Zanzibar

Travel to the ancient Swahili coastal city of Stone Town, arriving by midday. Enjoy an early-evening stroll along the coast before enjoying a local seafood feast and (if we’re lucky) a live performance of Taarab music. Start the next day with Zanzibar’s famous spiced coffee before a guided walking tour through the narrow, winding streets to the old slave market and the former palace of the Sultan of Oman. In the afternoon, set sail for one of Zanzibar’s tranquil and picturesque seaside lodges, where you will stay for three nights. Snorkel or scuba dive, swim with dolphins, go on a spice tour, or pursue some of the other ecotourism activities available to you.

delete later - darDays 13-14: Dar es Salaam

Travel to Dar es Salaam and spend the night in a seaside hotel. Cap off the learning tour with visits to the Canadian Embassy to hear about Canada’s development cooperation program in Tanzania, Tanzania’s Ministry of Agriculture to learn about the government’s plans for farming and food security, and the national farmers’ organization, MVIWATA. Enjoy a guided tour of the city and a meal at the famed Badminton Institute, known for its delicious Indian cuisine.
